Tea from Portugal – Europe’s Pioneering Tea Origin

Portugal and tea — it is a combination few expect. Yet the Azores is the oldest tea region in Western Europe, with a history dating back to 1883. On the island of São Miguel, Gorreana was the first to produce tea and has done so without interruption for over 140 years.

On the mainland, Chá Camélia has been writing a new chapter since 2011. On a former vineyard near Porto, tea grows according to Japanese methods, with respect for Portuguese terroir. From oolong aged in port wine barrels to fresh green tea with a salty Atlantic touch, the production is small but the craftsmanship exceptional.
