Nepal

Nepal produces tea in the east of the country, at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,000 metres. Tea cultivation began in Ilam, a district bordering Darjeeling, and spread across five official tea zones. More than 80 per cent of production leaves the country anonymously, bought up by foreign traders who sell it under their own label.

A growing group of small producers and cooperatives is deliberately choosing orthodox tea and organic cultivation. Nepal Tea Collective brings tea directly from the garden to the consumer, without intermediaries, and supports more than 700 farmers.
