Oriental Pekoe is a black tea from Lama Tea Garden in the Teesta Valley (India), run by Sonam Paljor Lama. The garden lies in the same region as the recognised Darjeeling estates, but today does not qualify for the official label. That is reserved solely for the large estates.
The tea plants grow at over 1,600 metres, with views of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world. At that altitude, the leaves grow more slowly, which strongly brings out the honeyed sweetness and the floral, fruity notes.
Here, the tea plants grow among the trees of the surrounding forest, in soil that has never known the depletion of plantation farming. Sonam uses no chemical pesticides.
Storing loose leaf tea correctly is important to preserve its freshness and flavour. Keep it away from the four elements that affect quality: air, heat, light, and moisture.
