How to store loose tea leaves

Nothing beats a wonderful cup of tea to start your day. But did you know that the way you store your tea leaves has a significant effect on their freshness and flavour?

Article: How to store loose tea leaves

Tips

It is essential to store tea leaves properly and protect them from the elements that affect their quality: air, heat, light, and moisture.

Air

When storing tea leaves, an airtight container is best. Oxygen is the number one enemy of freshness when it comes to tea: air causes the leaves to oxidise. A resealable pouch or an airtight tin is a good solution.

Heat and light

It is also important to protect your tea leaves from excessive heat and light. Store them in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight or heat sources such as radiators or ovens. This helps them retain their freshness and delicate flavours for longer.

Moisture

Moisture is another factor that can affect the quality of your tea. Tea leaves are hygroscopic, meaning they readily absorb moisture from their surroundings. To prevent this, make sure your storage container or packaging is completely dry. Do not store tea leaves in places with high humidity, such as near a sink.

Aromas

Pay attention to other aromas as well. Tea leaves have a remarkable ability to absorb smells from their environment. If stored near strongly scented substances such as spices or cleaning products, they can easily take on those smells. Try to keep your tea away from these sources of aroma.

The right storage container

Not every material is equally suitable for storing tea leaves. Tins are a good choice: they seal well and block light. Ceramic pots with a well-fitting lid work equally well. Glass jars are only suitable if they are dark in colour, as clear glass allows light through.

Not all teas are equally sensitive

Green and white tea are the most delicate. Their fine aromas fade quickly when exposed to air, light, or heat. Store them in small quantities and use them within six to twelve months. Black tea is more robust and keeps well for up to two years when stored correctly. Pu'erh is an exception: this type of tea deliberately needs some air circulation and can be stored for years, with the flavour continuing to develop.

Buy in small quantities

The fresher the tea, the better the flavour. It is better to buy in smaller quantities so that you always have fresh tea at home.

Enjoy

Follow these tips and you can enjoy genuinely fresh tea for longer. By protecting your tea leaves from air, heat, light, moisture, and other aromas, you ensure that every cup is a pleasurable experience. Store your tea in a well-sealed container or tin, and find a cool spot in your kitchen.
