Ancient banyan trees, ruby mines, and tea fields: in Mogok, a region in northern Myanmar, they have existed alongside each other for centuries. Mogok has been known for its rubies for 800 years and, alongside gemstones, also produces tea.
It is in this remarkable landscape that Mogok Tea has its origins, on the Five Trees Estate, a place where nature and spirituality are deeply woven into daily life.
Mogok is internationally known as the "Valley of Rubies". Burmese rubies have long been considered the finest quality in the world. The gemstones are extracted from open pits and underground tunnels, and sold at the markets of Mogok and nearby Kyatpyin.
Tea bushes grow on the slopes surrounding the town, and the people who live there combine mining, farming, and livestock-keeping as means of livelihood. That combination is visible in daily life and in the culture of the region.
On the Five Trees Estate stand banyan trees whose roots have been entwined in the earth for more than eight centuries. According to local tradition, a benevolent spirit, the Yoke Ka Zoe, watches over the land and the majestic banyan trees that grace the landscape. It is on this estate that Mogok Tea has its origins. Here, tea is not simply a drink: it is a reflection of a deep bond with the surrounding land.
The Yoke Ka Zoe is an invisible protector, symbolising prosperity and safeguarding. At the foot of each banyan tree stands a shrine, decorated with offerings of fresh flowers, pure water, and fruit. These are brought by the local residents every day. Even the ruby miners bring offerings of red sweets, a nod to the gemstones they seek underground.
These offerings symbolise gratitude for the presence of the Yoke Ka Zoe and form a constant part of daily life on the estate. Legends tell that encounters with the Yoke Ka Zoe lead to a life that changes overnight. Some encounters are said to have brought wealth beyond imagination. But it is not only about material wealth: the protector also stands for wellbeing, harmony, and a sense of belonging to the land.
The teas of Mogok Tea are an act of tribute to the Yoke Ka Zoe, reflecting the bond between the spirit and the surrounding land.
The Tree Spirit white tea represents the purity and grace of the protector, along with the symbiotic relationship between nature and the tea pickers. The Tiny Temple green tea is a tribute to the many sacred places beneath each banyan tree, where dreams are whispered and cherished. And then there is Black Ruby, a nod to the prosperity that the protector embodies. The leaves are as precious as the unique gemstones the miners unearth, and the result is a dark infusion, rich with promises of protection and prosperity.
Ceremonies in Mogok honour the spirit of the Yoke Ka Zoe. They reflect the highs and lows of life, the changing of the seasons, and the abundance of the harvests. Every tea leaf picked connects past, present, and future. Mogok Tea produces its tea ethically and brings it to tea lovers around the world.
The region where all this takes place is today under severe pressure. The civil war that has afflicted Myanmar for decades escalated dramatically after the military coup of February 2021. The residents of Kyauk Saung, the village where the Five Trees Estate is located, are also feeling the consequences.
Tea Kulture supports the community there through a medical project, about which you can read more in our article on medical care in Kyauk Saung.
