A black tea from Meghalaya, India, between Assam and Darjeeling.
India is the world's second-largest tea producer after China. Production is concentrated in three regions: Assam, with the warm lowlands of the Brahmaputra river, Darjeeling in the Himalayan foothills, and the Nilgiri Hills in the south. Assam alone accounted for more than half of India's total harvest in 2024, predominantly through the CTC method.
Darjeeling was the first Indian product to receive official geographical indication protection and is known for its muscatel character. The northeast is also home to small-scale tea regions such as Meghalaya and Sikkim, where all production is organically certified.
