Malawi

Malawi was the first African country to produce tea commercially. The tea fields are located in the Shire Highlands, in the districts of Thyolo and Mulanje, in the shadow of the country's highest mountain. The sector exports approximately 31,000 tonnes annually and provides work for around 50,000 people.

The majority of production consists of CTC tea for blends. Alongside this, a segment of orthodox specialty tea is growing among smaller estates that focus on quality and provenance. The Tea Research Foundation in Mulanje develops cultivars specifically adapted to the Malawian terroir.
