Tamaryokucha Superb

Tamaryokucha Superb is the flagship product of Ikeda Chaen, a family business in Nagasaki, Japan, led by Ikeda Ryō. When his father became a buyer at the Ureshino tea auction in 1941, the family had to stop growing tea. Auction rules do not permit a buyer to also be a producer. Since then, Ikeda Chaen has specialised in shiage: the refining of raw tea.

This tamaryokucha is a green tea that is deeply steamed. The scent is reminiscent of broth and boiled potato, with a hint of blackcurrant. The flavour is dominated by umami: rich and savoury, with spiced notes of oregano and thyme, in a creamy texture reminiscent of matcha.

In Nagasaki, ocha automatically means tamaryokucha, whereas elsewhere in Japan it almost always refers to sencha. The prefecture accounts for barely 1% of all Japanese tea production.
